Independent National Electoral Commission,has shown worries over the insecurity in Imo State, and hope it won’t affect the forthcoming governorship election in November 11th 2023.
The Commission Mallam Muhammed Kudu Haruna also included that the insecurity has lead to shortfall of manpower needed for the conduct for the poll in the state as most people are afraid to apply for positions such as Presiding and Collation Officers in the state.
The Commissioner who showed his worries about the growing level of insecurity and violence, in Imo States, said “it was unacceptable and not healthy for our democracy, because if the situation is allowed to continue, people would be afraid to come out to vote, on the election day.”
“Already, INEC is having a shortfall in the number of Ad-hoc staff needed to superintend over the forthcoming elections. This is because most people expected to work are afraid of their safety.” he stated.
Mallam Haruna urged all stakeholders in the state including the politicians, security operatives, political parties and the media to be advocate of peace, that only such would guarantee credible conduct of the forthcoming election in the state, pointing out that our political gladiators are indeed, all citizens and must work towards ensuring a free, fair and credible elections.
